Double Feature Night with The Corey’s

You wait till mom finds out buddy!

What’s better than movie night with your sister? Movie night with a theme. Yep, we’ve gone and done it – created a long, long list of movies we want to watch crossing all genres (horror, Oscar winning, ’80’s, love to hate).

For our inaugural movie night, feature our first double feature (remember 99 cent double feature movies?) we chose ‘The Corey’s as our movie theme du jour.  I’m sure you remember the dynamic duo from the ‘80s.  Which was your favorite?  The funky fun-loving Haim? Or hunky dark-haired Feldman?

(When I was younger it was Feldman all the way…now I don’t know what the hell I was thinking)

All you ’80’s aficionados, will know that Corey Feldman and Corey Haim starred in a number of movies together in the ’80’s. Sort of like the Brat Pack, I guess the audience liked the two of them together.

The Corey’s in The Lost Boys

One of my favorite movies of all time – The Lost Boys was one such movie.  A young Jason Patric (Michael) and his brother played by Corey Haim (Sam) move to Santa Carla in the hopes of making a new start with their recently divorced mother.  Unbeknownst to them, they’ve moved to the Vampire Capital of the world!! After Michael runs into a pretty girl at the pier, complete with live music and bonfires, he’s lead down a road that ends in eternal life – or – vampire-hood at least.

Poor Sam, who is strangely naïve for his age, must come to terms with his bloodsucking brother and calls on the assistance of the Frog brothers (Feldman) to help save him.  The Frog brothers work for their parents in the local comic book store. What ensues is stupidly funny. I’m not sure if I love it so much because I loved it then? But I personally think if you haven’t seen it, its worth watching. How can you go wrong with Vampires, iconic ‘80s actors and a lot of humor?

Next up, we watched a little known movie called Dream a Little Dream. Let me just preface this by saying, I haven’t seen this movie in probably 25 years. When I thought back to that time, I remember loving this move so much!

Starring Jason Robards, Piper Laurie and the Corey’s, it centers around Robards who is an aging academic and Feldman who is a typical teenager.

The Corey’s in Dream A Little Dream

Robards is growing old and is in search of a way to retain his youth.   Somehow, and this is where it starts to be unclear for me, he manages to invade Feldman’s body and therefore be young again.  Except, when he completed his experiment, he brought his beloved wife along too. Once he realizes where he is and what happened he is now racing against a ticking time clock and if he doesn’t figure out how to return them both to their original bodies, she may disappear forever.

What remains unclear, even at the end of the movie – is whether this was all a figment of a dream for Robards? Or if really had been in Feldman’s body experiencing life as a teenager. The ending came with no real resolution to the story and as the audience, we were never given the chance to get to know the characters.  The story jumped around too much to truly enjoy any part of what was happening.

Where once I truly love this move, this time around, I was left confused about the plot and wondering what happened to the rest of the story.

I wouldn’t ever watch this movie again. And the only thought I came away with is that I need to watch the iconic movie Carrie again, as I was reminded of her crazy mother every time I heard Piper Laurie speak. And “They’re all gonna laugh at you” played over and over in my head for days afterward.

There you have it…two movie’s starring the Corey’s…one a complete dud that I loved when I was a child, the other an all-time classic that I love to this day.  If you haven’t seen The Lost Boys, my advice is – you SHOULD. Beyond that, skip Dream a Little Dream – it’s a couple hours you cant get back.

What’s your favorite ‘Coreys’ movie?
